UBO: 11th in the thematic Shanghai ranking 2022 for oceanography

Ranked 13th in the 2020 edition, the University of Western Brittany has moved up two places this year in the Shanghai university ranking. It is now positioned in 11th position!

This is great news when you know how difficult it is to appear in this ranking.

The Shanghai Ranking is a study conducted every two years since 2017 by the Jiao Tong University in China. This ranking compares more than 2,500 higher education institutions around the world, judging their investment and commitment to their research activities.

The involvement of the different laboratories and units of the IUEM in research activities at the leading edge of oceanographic sciences largely contributes to this good result. Thanks to the investment of the researchers, the UBO is the second French university and the 4th European university!

Ranking method :

The ranking is based on 54 scientific disciplines grouped into 5 themes (Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences). The classification uses a series of weighted academic indicators to measure the performance of the world’s universities in the related fields.

These indicators are:

  • research output (= the number of articles published on an academic topic in major journals)
  • research influence (= published articles that have been cited more than the average
  • international collaboration ( = the number of published articles involving at least two different countries)
  • research quality ( = the number of articles published in one of the 180 best journals identified beforehand)
  • international academic awards (= the number of members of the institution who have won a major award in an academic discipline since 1981)
